Villefranche sur Mer
Having looked after Michael Douglas, and Gerard Dépardieu, now you too can enjoy a stay-put holiday at the Hotel Welcome situated in the old fishing port of Villefranche sur Mer, only five minutes out of the busy city of Nice.
This two hundred year old hotel is situated right on the waterfront! Having been a former convent it is hardly any wonder that the former religious authorities chose this prime spot along the coast! From the moment you step on to your private balcony overlooking this special bay, you will realise that you are in a special place.
The famous French artist Jean Cocteau lived in the hotel for some time, and if you are a fan of this artist, you can see the Chapelle St Pierre opposite the hotel which he decorated, Then if you are a really big fan of Cocteau you can ask to stay in the wonderful Jean Cocteau bedroom!! The theme for this bedroom is based on his quote “de temps en temps il faut se reposer de rien faire” (from time to time just take a rest for no reason at all!!).
To have a holiday without a rental car can be difficult in some locations, but being without a car here is almost an advantage. You can easily walk around the waterfront to St Jean Cap Ferrat in order to see the impressive Ephrussi de Rothschild Foundation with its superb garden and equally memorable art collection. Walk a little further on and you can visit St Jean and Beaulieu with their impressive boat harbours.
From Villefranche there are regular bus services into Nice, and Monte Carlo, and if you yearn to get your feet wet, a regular boat service can pick you up from the hotel to take you for an afternoon cruise along the Riviera coastline, or you could even take a day trip to Corsica on the new fast ferry.
This is a spot to treasure! I get “goose bumps” just thinking of it!
