Alsace, Corsica and Riviera

14 August to 2 September 2011, 19 nights

This tour will begin with three nights in Paris. While in Paris we will travel and explore off the tourist trail, especially including a visit to Auvers sur Oise – the final resting place of the great Vincent Van Gogh. We will then have five days exploring Alsace in the east of France. Alsace offers us a diet of sauerkraut, mixed languages, and frequent border changes, as well as the Rhine River and the attractive scenery of the Vosges mountains, and villages of half-timbered houses overflowing with geraniums. During our four days (and five nights) here we will see such things as Mont Saint Odile near Obernai, the impressive Chateau Haut Koenigsbourg with its views over the Vosges mountains and Black Forest. We will explore the wines of Alsace through Ribeauvillé, Riquewihr and Keysersberg. One day we will explore the mountains, flora and fauna of the mountains, the Ballon des Vosges.

Following this we will take the fast train back to Paris for our flight to Ajaccio in Corsica. This “Island of Beauty” will astound you! From its pristine sandy beaches to its craggy coastline, to its truly magnificent mountains and nature reserves, we will travel! It is a land with a chequered historical background, and you will experience this history from the megalithic period, through the Napoleonic years, to today. As well as learning all there is to know about this wonderful island, you will also just have a chance to soak in the beauty of the island and just have a lovely holiday! We will be staying in both the seaside town of Propriano with its white beaches in the south, and the seaside port town of Calvi in the north, bustling with hordes of multimillion dollar pleasure craft. A visit to Corsica is like a step back in time – Provence as it was 100 years ago, where you can still see the shepherds tending their flock day and night in the open fields. John Reese, our guide for this tour, has been visiting this special place for the last 25 years on an almost annual basis so is surprisingly well versed to entertain us here!!

We then fly back to Nice to our hotel in the fishing port of Villefranche sur Mer. We will have two days here where we will concentrate on the 20th century Art that is prevalent in this region. We will see where the artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Renoir, Braque, Miro, and Modigliani gained their inspiration – seduced by the light and colours of this corner of the world. This tour will end on the morning of 2 September.
